A key with a machine name in front applies on that machine only, and overrides the plain key there:
border: black
c64.border: blue
zx.border: red
On a C64 the border is blue, on a ZX Spectrum red, everywhere else black.

Within one source
A prefixed key only beats the plain key from the same source. The sources themselves still apply in their order: a plain border: red in a page header beats c64.border: blue in site.8ss, because the page header comes later.
