Inline markup

8TML > Reference

Inline markup works inside paragraphs, headings, quotes, list items, form labels and link text.

  • Emphasis: *emphasis* and **strong**.
  • Inline tags: <b>, <i>, <rev>, <br>, <center> and the color tags.
  • Colors: the 16 color names.
  • Links: [text](url).
  • Escapes: &lt;, &#60;, \* and friends.

How inline styles work

While it shows a block, a client keeps two things:

  • the role of the block (normal text, heading, link, quote, …), which gives its base style from the stylesheet, and
  • the inline state: an optional color and three flags, b (strong), i (emphasis) and rev (reverse).

A color replaces the current color; b, i and rev add their effect on top. Any closing tag, and the closing * or ** of an emphasis, resets the inline state to the role’s style. There is no nesting and no stack. The end of a block resets everything.
