Numbered lists

A number followed by . starts a numbered item. The numbers count upward as in Markdown: the first item shows its written number, every following item the previous number plus one, whatever is written.

1. First
2. Second

4. Shown as 3: a blank line doesn't end the list

A paragraph ends it. The next list
starts with its own first number:

5. Five
5. Shown as 6

Rules

  • There is one list level; nested lists don’t exist.
  • A list item wraps with a hanging indent: continuation lines start under the item’s text, not under the bullet or number.
  • A following line indented by at least two spaces continues the item (joined with a space). Spaces before a bullet are ignored.
  • Blank lines between numbered items don’t end the list; any other block does.
  • A line like 1984. was a good year is a list item. Write 1984\. or 1984. to keep it a normal line.
